With increasing accidents and casualties at worksites across the globe, the Government of Singapore has decided to add another tooth to the mobile crane system to ensure increased safety with the utmost accuracy. The ministry has recommended empowering the crane machine with Black Box (Data Logger) to curb potential accidents on the workplaces.
Followed by a 2-year extended study by the Ministry of Manpower, the National Crane Safety Taskforce, and other industry experts, it has been found that the inclusion of data logger can empower the crane operators to identify the potential risks at the outset. The device is highly advanced in terms of its features and applications that it can store all the information and safety status of a crane machine. In course of handling a crane machine, it can be a challenging task to monitor the weight of the load, the operating lifting range, and the angle at which the mobile cranes are placed if the crane lacks data logger or load moment indicator.
Most of the crane operators were depended on the safety device that was only efficient to alert them in terms of overloading. But the latest one includes advanced application that ascertains that the lifting operation is being handled in accordance with the proposed lifting plan. The study found some common violations while operating crane machines. The violations identified at workplaces include damaged, oxidized and kinked wire controls on the machines, falling apart to ensure a proper lifting plan and permit-to-work system. The ministry has also stressed on the obligation to install the device and to follow a proper lifting plan for a safer and more productive crane operation.
