Manitowoc-MLC165-5
Outside Gerald Gentleman Station, your eyes will witness Manitowoc 21000 crane, one of the largest cranes in the world. With the help of attached booms, this crane can span up to 640 feet. The Nebraska Public Power District is fortunate enough to utilize the crane’s strength in making various repairs during its spring maintenance outage.

GGS station manager, Gerry Phelps said, “It’s a mechanical marvel,” and admits the superiority of this mechanical wonder. This supergiant crane arrived at the plant in nearly 100 truckloads and it was assembled by using another crane. It’s not the first time when crane came at the plant; previously in 1999-2000, it was used for repairs to the baghouses.

This time it is here to remove existing duct work and to replace it with new pieces that are assembled on the ground. Phelps said, “It relieves a lot of stress,” and without the crane, the job could take more than a few months and would put workers at a higher risk. The unit would have to be shut down and workers would be forced to disassemble and reassemble the duct work in place.

According to Phelps, the crane can lift more than 1,000 tons; the largest piece that it will pick up at the power plant weighs about 100 tons, and the crane will be moving it 300 feet. He said regular maintenance and scheduled outages are one of the major things that help in Nebraska’s largest power plant running. He said, “We bring over 30 million dollars a year to the local economy.”
