Spring Tensioning in 3 Easy Steps

As the cable reel goes through hundreds of cycles letting cable out and bringing it back in, inevitably the spring pack inside the reel begins to lose some of its tension.  Much like the clutch in a car, this is simply a function of repeated use and is unavoidable.  Unfortunately due to the high tension and potential in the reel spring pack, this is an item which is not serviceable.  If the spring pack wears out, a new cable reel or at least new cable reel shell is needed.  However, before this happens it is possible to tighten the spring pack and get additional use out of the cable reel.

Symptoms that your spring may be aging include excessive slack visible in the length cable, especially in high wind situations.  Often times the LMI will sense a discrepancy and may display an E01/E02 Error Code or an E87 Error Code.

In undertaking this procedure please make sure you are qualified and be cautious as the drum is under heavy spring tension.  You should never attempt to open the drum itself.  Additionally, if you do not feel comfortable with this procedure yourself, please feel free to contact us for assistance toll free in the US at 855.BODE.TEC or internationally at +1.303.433.8878.

SIMPLE 3 STEP PROCEDURE

Cable Reel Spring Tenstioning 1

STEP 1 – With a fully retracted boom, pull 1 – 5 wraps of length cable off the drum by carefully turning the drum counter-clockwise.  Clamp the drum side plates with vice grips to hold it securely and prevent any rotation.

Cable Reel Spring Tensioning 2

STEP 2 – With the drum clamped to avoid turning, slide the loose length cable carefully behind the drum and re-loop it by hand back onto the drum.  Keep in mind you are not turning the drum, just laying cable on by hand.

Length Sensor Reset Procedure

STEP 3 – Hold the remaining length cable tightly, placing slight tension on the reel, and release the vice grips.  Allow the drum to retract slowly and take up any of the remaining slack.  Complete the Length Sensor Reset Procedure as outlined in your PAT-Hirschmann Service Manual.
