Two Terex Crane SK 415 hammerhead tower cranes are being used for repairing large vessels at a shipyard on the American East Coast, providing an unusual solution for servicing large vessels.
Detyens Shipyards of Charleston, South Carolina specialises in the repair and refurbishment of international state and privately owned ships. It needed cranes that are safe and cost-efficient to continuously handle varying loads.  It selected Terex tower cranes to lift supplies and equipment used for alongside repairs from the pier to the side of the ship, and to serve two dry docks.

The two Terex Crane SK 415 hammerheads on the site were configured with 60m jibs to lift from 16–32t at heights of 45.7 and 57.6m beneath each hook. Other models in the series are provided with jib lengths of 40–80m.  As Loy Stewart, president of Detyens Shipyards said, “Today’s vessels are very much larger than those that we have traditionally been accustomed to working on. The height, capacity and reach of our Terex SK 415 cranes allow us to reach the ships’ extremes while enabling our operators to see exactly what they are doing, which is paramount to efficiency and safety.”

Stewart noted that the Terex Crane SK 415 model was also cost efficient, in part because it decreased costs through fuel efficiency. “Our gantry cranes are diesel-electric and burn a considerable amount of fuel,” said Stewart. “The SK 415s are electric which makes them a lot cheaper to operate.”
